The history of St. Peter's is tied closely to the history of gold-mining in Kirkland Lake. The church is literally built on a rock. The site was donated by the famous Sir Harry Oakes who made his fortune here (and was later murdered in 1943 in Nassau - case never solved). The beginning of the parish can be dated precisely - Christmas Eve 1924 - and we celebrated the 75th birthday of our parish with a big cake after the Christmas Eve Eucharist in 1999. When Kirkland Lake was at its height in the 1940s the present building was constructed - 1948. We have some very unusual and interesting woodcarvings in the church depicting the local mining motif.

This parish was a very busy one when Kirkland Lake was in its heyday. With the gradual closure of all the mines, the town's population has declined from 25,000 in 1939 to 9,000 today. However the parish, though smaller, remains very active. We have an active ACW, altar guild, choir, Sunday school, quilting group, and prayer & praise group. St. Peter's has a valuable outreach into the community in the form of services held regularly at the hospital, Extendicare, Teck Pioneer Residence, Pollock Group Home, and 25 Tweedsmuir. The Kirkland Lake Brass Band makes its home at St. Peter's. Shortly we plan to start an Alpha program. St. Peter's is a friendly church with very dedicated people who work hard and also have a lot of fun. There is a deep faith in Jesus which unites us in all our endeavours. We look forward to having you with us any time you can be here.
