Sunday Worship - 11:00 am
The first worship building was built in 1935 (taking 3 years to complete) the location was 2nd Avenue NE {not Main Street} Geraldton. The first incumbent was the Reverend William Bradbury. Since Mr. Bradbury there have been ten rectors.
The current St. James' Church building was built in 1946. The stained glass which adorns this current building was procured by the Reverend Jim Watton and moved from Toronto to Geraldton in many pieces then reassembled with great care. The following is a notable quote about the completion of the building:
Those are not just shingles on the roof, they are a part of the men who put them there. That looks like brick siding but be not deceived, for they represent weary hours we nailed, and painted and plastered ourselves, both literally and figuratively speaking. We think that it is pretty. And it is...for it is built not upon concrete, not in muskeg, but upon the polished marble of faith. The faith of a little congregation who were told that it could not be done. There was no money, there were no materials, there were no carpenters. Yes, but there was a faith that they could not see, there was a determination that was not to be daunted. (The Reverend Jim Watton, 1946)
The wrought brass lights in the body of the church were made by Mr. Wallace (a blacksmith in the gold mine trade). The gold leaf adorning the lights represents the significance of the gold mines which were prolific at time.
In 1950 St. James added a separate church hall which was moved from Jamesville, Ontario. The church hall was used for many functions and events for over 40 years but in 1990 a decision was made to build a basement for the church. The church was moved on top of the basement foundation and the church hall was demolished.
Present Ministries
St. James' Ladies Group makes perogies and holds four teas and bake sales each year. The St. James Ladies also cater to parties and lunches after services (funerals, etc.). St. James women also participate in ecumenical events and bible studies. We have Sunday School twice per month. An ecumenical men's group, which includes several men from St. James', has been meeting at St. James' every Thursday at noon for study.
